I have been writing Ruby on Rails for 20 years, since before 1.0 shipped in 2005, and I go as deep in PostgreSQL. Most of that time has gone into taking stalled or degraded systems and making them shippable again.

Today I build and run two products. Boswell is case management for food pantries, shelters, and community health organizations, live at 50K+ household assistances a month and 1.2M+ to date. I co-founded the original company, left, then reacquired the product after it wound down and rebuilt it. Harmonic.fm is an independent music marketplace with Stripe Connect payouts.

Before that I was co-founder and CTO at bosWell, where I built the engineering function from scratch: the hiring, the interviews, the delivery cadence, and the standards. At Bonterra I took an auction product from beta to GA generating $1M+ at debut and cut onboarding time 75%, on a platform serving 20K enterprise customers, and the coding standards and review process I established were adopted across my department. Earlier I founded LoudCity and Loudcaster, two SaaS products serving 1,000+ online radio broadcasters, and exited to a competitor. Somewhere in there I lobbied Congress and got a Small Webcaster Settlement Act extension.

Since 2024 I have built production systems by directing AI coding agents, and I have been publishing what that actually takes since January 2025. The short version: the coding standards live in a rules file the agents read, every change clears a review gate before it ships, and there is a line between what runs unattended and what needs my sign-off. Nothing generated grades its own homework. Most of what I write here is about that, and about the parts that did not work.

I live in Somerville, Massachusetts, spend part of the year elsewhere, and own a couple of rental units I maintain badly and enjoy anyway.
